As the days grow shorter in the fall, many people find the
reduction in hours of sunlight takes a toll on there mood. In
severe cases this change may indicate the presence of Seasonal
Affective Disorder (SAD): a condition which affects 2-3% of
Canadians. Symptoms can range from a simple lack of motivation,
or a change in eating habits
to suicidal ideation & behaviour in extreme cases.
This is a form of depression and should not be taken lightly.
Seeking profesional help is a great idea (start with your family
doctor). There are also a number of ways you may be able to
help yourself, including improving your diet, increasing exercise,
taking vitamin supplements, and attending support groups to
name a few.
In some cases the symptoms of SAD can be treated with
light therapy. The fixtures generally recomended for this
purpose are full-spectrum fluorescent lights with a brightness
measured as 10,000 Lux.
The recommended usage is to sit approximately 18" (46cm)
from the light, positioned such that the light can enter your eyes but
without staring directly at it, for 20-30 minutes in the morning.
Therapeutic effects can often be felt within 1 week. However,
many people find the light does not eleviate their symptoms at all.
Hence, it can be very worthwhile trying a light out as much as
possible before investing in one.
Please note the lights are definitely not recommended if you
have conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts. Caution is also
advised for users with Bipolar Affective Disorder because this therapy has
been known to trigger manic episodes. All in all its strongly
advised that you consult with a doctor before using
this form of treatment.
